If you’re a new blogger or online business owner, you are most probably wondering how to bring traffic to your website. As you might have guessed, there are paid sources of traffic and free sources of traffic.
We’d all prefer to get the most out of the free traffic sources though, right? The good news is that it is totally possible to make thousands of dollars or even more simply by using SEO and a few other tactics that we’ll share with you in this mini series for “How to get free high-quality traffic for your website?”.
Today we’ll talk about Pinterest, an overlooked platform that should receive more attention. Pinterest is still a little secret business owners use to get high-quality free traffic.
Most might believe that it’s just a social media platform but that’s not the reality. Pinterest is a search engine social media platform, which means your potential traffic and customers are actively searching for your products.
This platform work with keywords. You add the right ones in the description and other few key places we’ll talk about later, and the right traffic will find your pin and click on it.
I’ve seen people get millions of visitors per month, all for free, from this one platform. I also had great results with it and made thousands of dollars with a single pin.
So if your business isn’t already on this platform, you should get to it right now! The more you wait, the worse. We can only keep this platform as our little secret for so long.
First, go to Pinterest.com and register for an account. Once you’ve done that, switch to a business account. You can do that by clicking on the arrow pointing down in the upside right of the dashboard, then click on “Get more business tools”.
Once you’ve done that, it’s time to claim your website. You can do this by going to “Settings”, and at “Claim”. Where it says “Website” press on “Claim” and copy the code written under “Add HTML tag”. Keep your Pinterest tab open. Next, go to your WordPress dashboard and click on “Plugins” from your dashboard menu, and then on “Add New”.
Write “Yoast” in the search bar and install and activate the plugin from the image below. After you’ve done that, you should see an “SEO” option in your dashboard menu. Hover on that and click on “Socials”. Go to the “Facebook” tab as in the picture below and make sure “Add Open Graph meta data” is enabled. Next, go to the Pinterest tab and add the HTML tag that you copied earlier. Click on save changes, then go back to Pinterest and click on “Continue”. They will ask for your website in order to verify it. That’s it! Now you have a Pinterest business account and a verified website. These are important steps you must take in order to use the tools Pinterest offers you and get the most out of it.
How to bring free high quality traffic to your blog with Pinterest
On Pinterest we use pins. These are graphics we design and post on the platform. Here’s an example of two of our pins:
The first one is a template from Canva, while the second one is a template we’ve created. Both bins have been designed in Canva.com with the paid version but you can also create high-quality social media content for free.
You must make sure to use clear fonts, high-quality pictures, and easy to the eye colors. Canva has a big variety of pictures, but if you are not happy with them then I suggest you download some from royalty-free picture websites such as Unsplash.com, Rawpixel.com, or Pexels.com. Remember that you can’t use any photo you find on Google or social media! You might get sued for it.
You should write a click-worthy sentence, make people want to know more. Our goal is to make people click on our pins so that they can get to our websites.
A great way to learn what people are clicking on is by searching your subject on Pinterest. If your article is about healthy breakfast recipes, for example, then you should write that in the search bar. Analyze the first results. See how their pins look, what they wrote in them, and how.
How to use Pinterest
Once our pins are ready to go, it’s time to learn about how Pinterest works. First and foremost, you must remember that this is a search engine type of platform. This means people are searching on Pinterest subjects or products they are interested in.
You must use the right keywords if you want your pins to show up in the right people’s searches. Write a keyword related to your article in the search bar. For example, if your article is a list of Breakfast Recipes Ideas, you will write that in the search bar and click on search. The results page will show you several keywords related to breakfast. Those are the most searched words on Pinterest. Therefore those are the keywords you’ll later use in the title and description of the pin.
Make sure to also add the keyword in the image description before uploading it on the platform. You can do that by clicking right on the image and on “Rename” in your documents on your computer. For this example, you’ll name your pin “breakfast recipes healthy ideas”.
Upload the pin and write your title. Your title could be “Healthy & easy breakfast ideas recipes to try this week”.
Next is your description, which will go as following: Check out the best quick and easy healthy breakfast recipe ideas, including oatmeal with peanut butter and banana, eggs with vegetables, and greek yogurt with integral bread. Starting your morning right can only happen if you eat a filling and healthy breakfast! #breakfastideas #healthybreakfastrecipes #healthyeating #recipeideas
You must also make sure to have your boards in place, with a keywords stuffed description and name. Make sure to have sentences though and not just a keyword after the other, as it has been proven that the first option works better.
You should have a minimum of three boards for each subject. For example, you should have “Recipe ideas”, “Healthy breakfast ideas,” and “Breakfast ideas” for your breakfast ideas article.
If you are just starting, you can save other people’s content on the same subject, make sure the pin actually gets you to the right page, and has the right keywords for your board.
After posting your pins to the platform, you should repin them to the other related boards but don’t do it the same day. Pinterest has made some changes in the last year or so. A lot of repining was acceptable back in the day but in present, they don’t see it with good eyes anymore. If you have posted a new pin today, wait at least two days before repining it to your other boards. Don’t repin it more than four times. This was also allowed in the past, you were allowed to repin the same pin to a board as many times as you wanted. Now it can put you in Pinterest jail.
The only time you are allowed to repin is with seasonal pins. For example, if last year you posted a pin with Christmas recipes, you can repin it the next years as well. If a few months passed you are more than welcome to give them a few repins to boost them.
You can also apply for group boards. These are boards created by other people who accept contributors. If they accept you in their group board, you’ll be able to post pins to their board for all their followers to see.
Pinterest has become smarter about this as well, which means you could be accepted in a group board that has one million followers, and still, your content won’t be seen by any of them. That’s why you must pick the right boards with high engagement rates. You can check it out by clicking on the owner’s profile and see how many monthly views they have. You should also check if the group board is niche related or everyone posts whatever they like. Only apply for those that are niche related.
How to be added
Most of the group board owners have the details in the board’s description, telling you to message them directly on Pinterest or sent them an email.
Hi, x! I’m x. I stumbled upon your group board and I thought it fitted my blog subjects quite well.
I write about x, x, and x. Here is a link if you want to check it out xxxx.
If you decide to add me to it, I promise I will follow all your rules.
Here are my Pinterest account and email.
Thank you in advance, x.
Tools you need for Pinterest success
One of the best tools I would advise you get is Tailwind, a social media scheduler, and analytics tool. Tailwind will analyze your account and tell you when it’s the best time to post. Posting and repining can become time exhausting, which is why you should use a scheduler tool. Tailwind lets you schedule hundreds of pins in just a few minutes, along with repins.
For example, remember how I talked about waiting for at least two days before repining? You can schedule your first pin, and then schedule a repin to another board two days later. Tailwind will automatically post said pin for you at the exact time and date you chose.
GIFT: GET A FREE MONTH OF TAILWIND BY CLICKING ON THIS SPECIAL LINK
My Pinterest account was stagnating, sending me only a few visitors per day. This until I started using Tailwind. My blog traffic skyrocketed to 100 visitors per day in less than two weeks of using it!
My impressions constantly grew, adding tens of thousands every two to three days, and got me from 20k to 300k in three weeks. Tailwind is a must-have if you use Pinterest marketing for your blog or business. (and if you don’t yet, get to it fast because it’s an incredible source of free and cheap traffic!)
The pricing starts at 15$ per month if you choose to pay monthly, but you also have yearly options that offer you four months for free. You also have the option of powerups, with which you can join more Tailwind tribes and add more pins to them. The standard is 5 tribes and 30 pin shares that you get even if you decide not to buy any Tailwind service. But my advice is to do so, because it will help you get way more traffic than you would with free Pinterest marketing.
Tailwind tribes are similar to a Pinterest group board, but here the members are way more willing to repin your content. Every tribe comes with a set of rules, but most of the time you must schedule someone else’s pin for every pin you post. This will help you boost your pins from the start, and trick the Pinterest algorithm a little. Get a free Tailwind month HERE .
