If there would be one advice I could give to a new blogger or online business owner, it would be this: start building your email list early!
This article contains affiliate links, which means we make a commission if you decide to buy through them. This comes at no bigger cost to you but it helps us continue to create content.
So many people skip this step, and I am going to be honest with you, I did it as well when I first started with my online business.
I started building my email list about a year ago and I am so glad I did! I usually use it either to keep up with my audience or to promote affiliate links or my own products. I will not share my website for obvious reasons but I can tell you this one is the health niche. You can, however, activate in almost any other niche and still have success with your email list. It doesn’t matter what you promote but how. Which is what I’ll teach you later in this article.
Starting an email list is important because this is the safest way of building and keeping an audience. Your social media accounts could be affected by algorithm changes, platform new rules, and so on. Your website might suffer when it comes to traffic depending on your tactics, such as paid or free organic traffic. We all know how all those Google algorithm changes ruined thousands of blogs in a single day!
But your email list is yours, always there, ready to open your emails whenever you send them one. Here’s the thing: your blog or online business might receive new visits every day, but if you don’t have an email subscription in place, then you lose them. Even if they click on an ad or affiliate link and you make some money, the relationship between you and them will most probably end there. If they subscribe to your email list, on the other hand, that means you could promote new products through affiliate links or even your own! Plus, you gain free niche-targeted traffic for your blog whenever you post a new article and promote it to your email subscribers.

So how exactly do you start an email list? And most importantly, how do you grow it? Continue to read to find out!
First, you must pick your email provider. Personally, I recommend Constant Contact. Their services are designed in perfect accordance with every new blogger’s needs. It doesn’t matter if you are just starting out and aren’t too tech orientated. Constant Contact (learn more about them HERE) has everything you’ll ever need to build an email list, and they let you do so with extremely attractive prices at just $20 per month, or with great discounts if paid for six months or a year! They also offer a FREE TRIAL that you can access through THIS LINK so you can test their services without having to pay.
CLICK HERE TO GET STARTED, then click on the “START YOUR FREE TRIAL MONTH” button on the left. This will take you to a page where you’ll have to pick your number of subscribers and give your details.
For beginners, 500 subscribers are the right number and your ideal target. Select that, then pick your paying choice. You get monthly, at $20, for six months with a 10% discount and your first month free at $90, or for a year at $187 with a 15% discount and your first month free. You know your budget so it is totally up to you how you want to spend your money on your business. The only important thing to mention is that having an email list is a must-have if you want to own a successful blog or online business.
Once you registered, you’ll get access to many useful tools and tips for your email marketing strategy which we’ll talk about next.
Once you have created your email list, you must add a subscription in a few key places on your website so you can start building it. The most important one is as a pop-up. Usually, you must offer a free simple product in exchange for the email when using this tactic. Depending on your niche, you can write a short e-book with a useful guide that solves a problem. Then, you must set up an email in your Constant Contact dashboard for your list, which offers the e-book your promised.
If you are not willing to write an e-book yourself, you could use one offered by an affiliate marketer you work with. My advice is to write the e-book though since that will help you connect better with your audience and give them a taste of your capabilities and products to come. I have a step by step guide on how to write an e-book and you can find it HERE.
This is the simplest way to build an email list and has worked quite well for me. Even more, this is my number one tactic for getting new email subscribers for all of my businesses, every day.
Another place to add your subscription is at the end of every article. Your blog/website theme most probably has that option incorporated, and all you have to do is add your email list link in the customization tab.
The last ones I recommend are in the sidebar of the website, and on the homepage.
After you’ve set up everything, it’s time to design your welcome email. Keep it simple, and offer the free e-book as fast as possible. Say a few things about yourself and what they should expect from your email list subscription. This includes how many emails you’ll send per week and what they will contain.
Then offer the promised e-book at the end of the email and promise to get back soon with more helpful content.
Once you start building your email list, it’s time to put it to use. Again, depending on your niche, you should craft short helpful emails weekly. I must mention that Constant Contact, the email subscription provider I recommended you earlier, offers unlimited emails, while other providers make you pay for each one once you reach a certain number, such as 100, or 1000. Depending on your number of subscribers, those emails get used pretty fast, which lets you unable to keep in touch with your subscribers for the rest of the month. Constant Contact understands a blogger or business owner’s needs and that’s why they are the provider of which services I 100% recommend. So click here to learn more about them if you haven’t started your free trial already.
You should send at least two emails per week, with useful tips for your niche, besides the usual “here’s my new article’ email. And yes, you should send an email to your entire list every time there’s a new article on your blog. A few days later mention it again passing by in another email.
Make money with your email list
Remember you don’t need a big audience to make money with your email list. Even if you only have 100 subscribers, you could still make some if you promote your offer the right way. For example, last month I made over $1.000 with under 1000 subscribers.
I promoted affiliate products and also a short e-book I wrote in the health niche. People trust my website because I sent high quality emails with great tips from my niche. This is the secret behind having a successful email list, you must prove you know what you are talking about before actually promoting your own products. With affiliate marketing is a little bit easier and beginners friendly because you can simply share the authority of the author and still make some sales.
Last words on Constant Contact and why it’s the best platform you could use for your email marketing
- They offer a free trial, which means you get the option to test all their tools for free before deciding to stay with them. (Which I advise you do)
- They offer unlimited emails with every plan. Keeping in touch with your subscribers is important, something that other email subscription providers don’t seem to understand, or maybe they just want to make more money on your back. While with other platforms you run out of email pretty fast and you must pay more to continue to send email, Constant Contact lets you send as many as you want, with no limits. This is extremely important when you just started promoting a new product or affiliate link. Putting your products in front of your audience constantly gives you the chance to make more money, something you should never lose sight of.
- It’s beginner friendly. You don’t need to be too tech-savvy to use this platform. You can start in just a few minutes since they guide you through every step without issues.
- They offer all the tools and audience insights you could possibly need to start and develop a successful blog or online business.
- They have email templates for you, ready to use which means you can craft a beautifully branded email in just a few minutes without too much headache.
- They also have social media integrations for the biggest platforms out there which will let you promote all your accounts and attract a bigger audience.
- They have an extremely serious refund policy so you don’t have to worry about your money if you aren’t satisfied. But you will be!
