How to sell printables on Etsy – step by step
First, you’ll have to pick a niche for your Etsy store. The best place to do this is Pinterest, the second biggest search engine in the world. In 2021, over 80% of the people on the platform are there to explore their options before making a purchase. This means you can use it as a research tool to find your winning niche and product, all for free. We already have a step by step guide for you on how to find a trending product idea HERE, so click on the link to learn exactly how to do it with the help of Pinterest.
Once you have a niche and product in mind, it’s time to do your product research on Etsy as well. This is so you can make sure your product is actually trending on there, so you can make more sales.
The way to do this is by typing your main niche keyword in the search bar next and add the word “printable” at the end. For example, you could type in “water tracker printable” and see if you can find this product. You should also check if there are bestsellers and if bigger stores are selling them. You can create and sell a product even if you don’t find it there, just make sure there is a market for it.
If you have found a great printable idea on Pinterest and don’t see it on Etsy, it could be a winning product that hasn’t been discovered yet. Don’t be afraid to risk it, because oftentimes, this is exactly how you win in life.
If your product is available on Etsy and is doing well, then you can go on and do your keyword research. This is one of the most important steps when it comes to having success on Etsy.
You should type your main keyword in the search bar and see what the platform suggests for searches. Next, click on each suggestion and take a look at the products from the first page. Are there any words that keep repeating? Those are the keywords you should add to your product’s title and description.
Click on the best sellers and also check their keywords. It shouldn’t be too hard to recognize them. For example, if they are selling a daily planner, words such as “productivity”, “to do list”, “organized” will most probably show up.
When it’s time to add the product(s) to the store, make sure to add all these keywords in your sentences.
Now it’s time to design your printables. You can do this for free in Canva. They also have a paid option but the free account is also useful, with thousands of templates, elements, and pictures you can use for your projects.
Bellow, I have an example of a printable I designed in Canva in less than 20 minutes. The elements used are free and paid, but as I said, you don’t need the paid version to succeed with this business model. Remember to save your printables in PDF, JPG and PNG. This is you can make sure the client has many options when it comes to printing your product.
Create your store, add your products and promote them with Pinterest. First of all, you used Pinterest to find your product idea so it would be a shame to not come back once is created and promote it there.
Create a business Pinterest account if you don’t have one already specifically made for your Etsy store. We do have a step by step guide for you on how to use Pinterest marketing for online stores, you can check it out HERE.
Don’t panic if you don’t see traction right away. The Pinterest algorithm has changed in the last year and a half, and now you need at least three months of consistent pinning before gaining traction. Be patient and don’t give up because the results will be extremely rewarding once Pinterest decides to show your pins in the news feed and search results.
Remember to create appealing pictures for your products. You could have the best product in your niche, but if your images don’t suggest that, no one will click on it. You can use templates for tablets and laptops from Canva, or find images on Unsplash or Rawpixel and add your printable image on top to show the product.
