The truth is, you could learn about blogging for years and still feel like you’re just scratching the surface. But the most important secrets are the simplest ones. Here are three of the most important things I wish I knew when I first started blogging.
Seo isn’t what it used to be
You will hear a lot about SEO whenever reading about how to get more traffic. To a certain degree, it’s essential. But Google got smarter and will continue to do so, and what mattered for your traffic a few years ago – now doesn’t mean anything anymore.
Now, it’s extremely important to keep your readers hooked. Through SEO you get Google’s attention, telling it what your post is about. But you won’t look good in Google’s eyes if your visitors aren’t impressed with your content.
So, instead of adding a keyword ten times in the first two sentences which will only make your reader leave the website, try to write for your reader and then for Google.
You will look better and show up on the first page easier if your readers stay more than a few seconds on your blog and actually spend the time to read what you wrote. And the only way to do this is by writing for your reader and not for Google. We’ll get more into search engine optimization later.
You can’t write for yourself
Just as I said in the previous point, you must write FOR your reader which means you must be useful. When people go on blogs and websites, most of the time they’re searching for a solution to a problem they have. You can, however, post an opinion from time to time, keep your blog personal branded. But add a lesson, even when you show your point of view.
How to write posts people want to read
Let’s take blogging for example. This post is helping you with something, teaches you more about how to create a blog, letting you behind the curtain and giving you a step by step tutorial for your online business.
– Put the subject in the title. Let people know from the go what they’ll learn by reading your blog post.
– Make it personal in the first sentences. To keep the reader hooked, you must make it personal. Make the reader feel understood. See how I talked about the overwhelming world of blogging? If you’ve been here, even for a month or maybe even years, you will agree with me that it is, indeed, that kind of place. Create a connection.

Once you pick your blog’s platform, you’ll also need web hosting and a domain. Your WordPress blog needs a hosting provider, therefore you’ll have to pay for one. But as I said, it is very cheap and comes with a lot of facilities. Wel” talk later about the best self hosted software for blogging.
Once you built your blog, you’ll need a WordPress theme, which can be free or paid. Next, you’ll have to learn how to write content for your blog and how to optimized so you can gain free traffic.
Last but not least, you’ll have to learn how to monetize your blog and make money online. You have more options: using ads from companies such as Google Adsense or Mediavine, adding affiliate links to your articles, and many more we’ll talk about later in this blog post.

Jobs you thought will be here forever are now becoming instinct, all while new jobs are being born. Now it’s normal to be a blogger or an influencer. It’s a career, a job.
You should start a blog because it will add money to your income, or it could even become your main source of income in the house. Your blog could go pretty fast from a passive income source to what you are doing every day for a living.
Blogging offers you great opportunities, such as earning a living from something you love, getting to experience things you wouldn’t have been able to in other circumstances, and meeting people from all around the world who are passionate about the same topics you are.
What blog niches are most profitable
The niche is the main broad topic of your blog. For example, if you start a travel blog then your niche would be travel.
When thinking about your blog’s niche, you must also consider your monetization process. Picking a profitable niche for your blog is important if you want to make money online. So, what blog topics are most popular? Beauty and fashion have always been at the top, along with health, food and wellness, home decor, business, and financial advice.
How to pick your niche
A big misconception about choosing a niche for your blog is that you must be an expert. Of course, if your blog is about how to eat the right way, for example, then you should definitely have studies behind your content. In other niches such as fashion and beauty, wellness or home decor is more about passions and can create really successful blogs.

You can also promote products such as healthy food, and other products you might use in the process (notebooks to keep up with your progress, vessels in which you cook).
Don’t start a blog in a niche that doesn’t interest you. I’m guilty of this mistake with my first blog. Needless to say, it didn’t work out, and I closed it after a few months.
Not only you’ll have a harder time finding content to write about, but your readers will also sense the truth and leave. Always be truthful on your blog, write about your real interests.
How to pick a domain name/ aka how to name your blog
Next in line is picking a name for your blog. Take your time with this step. Otherwise, you’ll have issues with rebranding later that will cause you business trouble.
- Make it short and catchy. Don’t pick more than three words, and make sure they are easy to remember and say. Example: pinchofyum
- Use words related to your niche. Example: thehealthyblogger
- You could use your name if you’d like to add personal branding as a marketing technique. It can be a great option to teach people something and present yourself as an expert.
- Don’t make it too specific. Example: travelindia, while you write about traveling to Europe. Earthtravel would be a much better choice, giving you space for writing about more subjects.
When it comes to picking a domain name, I write down all the options I have and say them aloud a few times to see if it clicks. If I feel like something is wrong with the name, I change it.
Check its availability once you have your blog’s name. To do this, go to https://instantdomainsearch.com/ and write yours. You’ll find out if it’s taken or not, and receive other available suggestions. Next, you should also check social media and other online platforms where you might want your blog to appear. The major ones are Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter.
If it’s available everywhere, you’re good to go. If not, you have two options. The first one is to change the domain name. The second one is to play with your words and keep the idea but find an available option.
Now we’ll get a little more technical since you’ll have to pick your hosting company and install WordPress and all the plugins you’ll need for your blog to function correctly.

A step that is exceptionally important in the evolution and success of any small business, being self-hosted weights heavy. The difference is so substantial that just seeing them both side by side would be enough for someone to transition from a free to a paid blog hosting service.

How to start a blog on WordPress

– You will land on a page offering you three options for your plan. As a beginner blogger, the basic plan will be enough. You can upgrade later as your blog becomes bigger so don’t worry. With the simple plan, you will get 1 website, 50GB space (more than enough), a free domain, and an SSL CERTIFICATE for free. (the SSL CERTIFICATE has become important lately in the blogging world as Google and your visitors will trust your blog more if you have one).
After writing your domain (!make sure you wrote the right one!), you will be taken to a page where you must fill your details and pay. If you’re feeling nervous about the extras, know that you can uncheck all of them and your blog will still be just fine. In the beginning, there’s no need for too much fuss. Baby steps. You can always buy those later from your Bluehost account.
IMPORTANT: If you get the pop up with “choose your domain later” don’t pick that option! My advice is to find your domain name first and only after that buy the hosting. If you choose the option of picking your domain later it will be hard to change it and it will give you unnecessary work.
I still remember the first time I had to install WordPress. Now looking back I know it wasn’t THAT hard but as a beginner, it was quite a pain in the a**. How to pick a theme and design your blog
A short but essential segment will be about designing your blog. Branding (by definition: distinctive wording or design used to identify a particular brand) your blog is a must. Your potential followers and visitors must recognize your brand wherever it might appear. That’s why you should stay consistent with your branding on all your blog pages, in all your presence on social media, or when working with other businesses or promoting your own.
What it takes to brand your blog:
- The color palette you use. Choose up to four colors you’d like for your blog and use them for your buttons, background, titles, and so on. Make sure they are complementary and fit well. Don’t use bright colors or too dark, strive for harmony.
- Typography. Again, pick up to three fonts and use them for your articles, and other titles you might have on the blog. Also, use them for the content you post on social media.
- Pictures. Pick a style for your photos and stick to it.
- Find an excellent motto for your brand. Think about your blog, what do you want to transmit with it? Find a short and catchy sentence that will let people know what you’re about. Example: “Nokia – connecting people”.
- Logo. You can pay someone on Fiverr to do it for you or design it yourself in Canva. To find the right one, ask yourself how you could present your blog visually in a single picture, and start there.
- Your about page. Write a few sentences about your blog and your vision for your online business. Let people know why you started and where you plan to go.
You will have to buy a theme to start the actual process of designing. I use Themeforest for all my blogs. They have some great ones at small prices that come with a 6-month customer service which you can contact for any issues you might have. They also have themes grouped by style. You’ll have to go through them until you find the right one. Once you think you have a favorite, check the live demo, the reviews, and how often the customer support answers the comments left on the platform.
Check if it has the child theme included, and it’s mobile-friendly. Mobile is the future, so your theme and website must be responsive. If there are any designs you’d like to add, but your theme doesn’t support them, you can add a plugin such as Visual Composer for more customization. They have a free and a paid option. You can decide which one suits you best by checking their services at https://visualcomposer.com/.
For example, if you’d like to add an image in the middle of the page, but your theme doesn’t allow it, Visual Composer can help you with the free option. It also has multiple fonts, custom space size, separators, and more.
For the best use of the theme you bought, watch the live preview. Take a screenshot of everything you like. You can also go on their official website and check if they have listed other blogs build with their theme.
A lot of the big ones have this option. Next, go on each one and see what they created with it. Read your documentation and start designing your blog. An advice I have is to not get too caught up in it. I used to obsess over how my blog should look and what I want from it when in reality you can start simple and build more as time passes. So don’t get stuck in the process as I did, too many times to count.
How To Bring Traffic To Your Blog
Pinterest is, without a doubt, the star of this, simply because its resources are the gift that keeps on giving. But how exactly do you bring traffic to your blog? First of all, you must create an account for your business if you don’t have one already.
Second, you must switch to a business account. For this, go to settings and click on the ”switch to business”. The reason why this is important is that a business account has access to analytic tools which will be extremely helpful once you start to get traffic.
Use Tailwind for better results
Tailwind is a social media scheduler tool. With its help, you’ll learn when is the best time to post for the best results, you’ll get more in depth analytics that will help you understand your audience better. It also offers you the option of Tailwind tribes.
These are groups where bloggers post their best pins for the purpose of getting pinned. Each comes with its own set of rules, but all of them imply that you must share at least one pin from the group for each one you add. This way, everyone gets more repins, which helps the Pinterest algorithm to understand what your pin is about and therefore send you the right traffic.
If you wonder why you’d need Tailwind, let me tell you about my experience. My Pinterest account was stagnating, sending me only a few visitors per day. This until I started using Tailwind. My blog traffic skyrocketed to 100 visitors per day in less than two weeks of using it!
My impressions constantly grew, adding tens of thousands every two to three days, and got me from 20k to 300k in three weeks. Tailwind is a must have if you use Pinterest marketing for your blog. (and if you don’t yet, get to it fast because it’s an incredible source of free and cheap traffic!)

How to create great pins
The best option I know for creating pins is Canva.com, a free and paid graphic design website. There you’ll find hundreds of ready to use templates. Plus, it has thousands of elements to choose from to create the perfect pin. The best part is that the free option is more than enough, especially for beginners.
Pin that converts
For pins, use Canva, a free graphic design platform. Don’t use too many fonts. Make sure you don’t use too many colors either, and the ones you use are complementary. Explain what the post is about, use the right keywords.
Once you have created the pin, it’s time to do keyword research directly on Pinterest. If you did it right, you already have them, but it doesn’t hurt to check Pinterest for the popular keywords on the platform.
To do that, go to the search bar and write the main keyword for your blog post. Write down what appears in the search bar after your keyword. Pick one and click on it, then write down the first ones that appear under the search bar and above the pins. Next, create a short description for your pin with them.
Make sure you actually write sentences instead of just adding tags, as sentences convert better.
Create a few boards and name them with your keyword in mind. Example: Fashion, or Travel and Adventure. For each of them, also write a short description with even more keywords. This will help the Pinterest algorithm to understand better what your pins are about, and know which traffic to bring you.
You can pin others’ content as well, especially at the beginning, to attract more people to your account. Since the algorithm changed, the number of followers matters now. In the past, it didn’t that much. Now, Pinterest shows your fresh pin to your followers and in case they repin it, the algorithm will recognize it as good content and show it to other people on the platform.
Once you have a few posts on your blog and at least 10k unique visitors per month, you can request to be added to other group boards. (Please know Pinterest allows you to be added to group boards from the beginning, my advice though is to wait a little before actually requesting to do so).
How to find group boards
You can find them quite easily, by writing the keywords ”group board” into the search bar. You can also pay attention to what group boards other people are part of, by going on their account and checking their boards sections. Another option is to write group boards on Pinterest and click on the pins that get you to blog posts with group boards.
How to ask to be added
Most of the group boards have the details in the description, telling you to message them directly on Pinterest or sent them an email.

When it comes to Instagram, I’d say it can be a great source of traffic if done right but I’ll admit it is a little bit harder to do so. While Pinterest brings traffic to your pins through its smart algorithm, Instagram bets more on your own actions to do the same.
Use tags – Instagram allows you to use 30 on one picture, so make use of it.
Have a theme – your potential followers will be attracted through your theme, so make sure you are consistent with it and don’t just throw on your account whatever you find in your camera roll.
Post often – You can bring twice as many new followers to your account and traffic to your blog if you post at least once a day. If you can do more, even better. Around three times a day it’s the perfect ratio for a business.
Switch your account to business – it will help you better understand your audience and teach you when to post, for whom and what. Great insight!

SEO, aka search engine optimization, has always been the scary part of blogging. Many people are confused about what it is, how it should be implemented, or why it is so important.
So let me break it down for you in a short guide. Search engine optimization can be read as optimizing your content so that it can be found by the right people. Depending on which platform you’re on, there are some algorithms that scan your content and decide if it’s good enough or not to be shown when certain keywords are written in the search bar. This time we’ll talk about Google.
There are a few key steps you must take in order to have the best results and show your blog where it matters. First, you should do a keyword research to find your goldmine. The easiest way to do this is by writing a few keywords in your search bar on Google and watch the results. How are the titles worded? Another place to look at when doing this is at the end of the page. There you’ll find eight long-tailed keywords that people are searching for. Keep in mind that just finding your keywords isn’t enough. You must also find the ones that aren’t overused, so you could get a chance at landing on the first page of Google results.
You can use the Google Keyword Planner tool for free. Keep in mind you need a Google ads account for it, and you must have any ads blocker extension off to use it. Let’s take the keyword “blogger” as an example. The word has too many searches and even though the competition might appear to be low, I can guarantee you it would be hard to win the first places for that specific keyword.
How to start a blog for free and make money, on the other hand, has way fewer searches. This is what we call a long-tailed keyword, a more specific keyword that can bring more people to your blog.
Now don’t get me wrong. There are websites out there that can appear on the first page of Google for the keyword “blogging” ten days after they posted the article for it. But those websites have years and years behind them and are most probably seeing millions of visitors per month anyway.
For the smaller fish in the sea though, long-tailed keywords are the way. Once you found your keyword, it’s time to add it to the right places, and it should go as follows:
In your title, as close to the beginning as possible.
In the first sentence of the article.
For H1 and H2 headings. Make sure your title appears as a H1 heading, and use H2 for subtitles inside the article.
A few more times throughout the article.
For any image you add in the article, in the description and alt text.
In the URL of your article.
Once you have your main keyword, you must also find other ones that fit in the same niche/subject. For example, at blogging, you could add WordPress, article, blog, make money online, blog post, and so on. Use the results in the research tool to find a few more and add them throughout the article.
Another thing you must do is internal linking. Write a few more articles on the same subject, and post them on your blog. Then, link from one to the other in your articles. Lastly, add one or two links to other websites that appear on the first page of Google for your main keyword.
One more useful tip I can give you is to find a few other blogs willing to link to your article/s. If your blog post is about vegan lunch recipes, try to find three other blogs that have written about the same thing, and contact them. Ask them if they would accept to link to your article and offer them something in return. You could link from your article to theirs, write them a review, or anything else they might need from a fellow blogger.
One thing to remember is that Google likes websites that are loading fast. You can do everything right and have the best content, but if your website isn’t loading fast, you’re screwed. Make sure you talk to your hosting company about optimizing your website and also are using size images fit for the web. I do this by saving a picture “for web” in Photoshop before adding it to any website I own. You should also make sure your theme is mobile responsive. Don’t buy it before testing it on your phone!
All these tips will help you look good in the eyes of Google and give you the chance to bring more free traffic to your blog.
How bloggers make money through blogging
As a new blogger, your best chance at making money is by adding affiliate links. To make money with ads, you must have a decent amount of traffic which isn’t available in the first three months. Affiliate links, on the other hand, can make you money even if you have 100 visitors per day. And that is achievable in the first three months with the help of Pinterest for free.
Go to Canva and create a few pins then add them to Pinterest. You should also add other high-quality pins about your main keywords so that the algorithm knows what yours are about. Every year I update my articles, create new pins, and make them go viral before January. For the rest of the year, the pin will stay viral and make me money without me lifting a finger. I’ve been doing the same thing for the past few years, and I made thousands of dollars with a single article.
Another great tactic is to add Amazon affiliate links to your articles. If your blog post is about hiking, for example, add anything that might be related to it. You should also go to native shopping ads in the menu, click on custom ads, and create a list with your favorites. Another advice is to go to the Amazon trending page, see what people are buying, and add the top 9 products in your list then add the link at the of every article on your blog. You can do that in your theme most of the time. Don’t just add the link manually at the end of every article, it won’t update automatically once you change it in Amazon Associates.
Clickbank is another excellent platform, and you can use the content given by the seller and add it to your posts, along with an affiliate link.
Once you have a decent amount of traffic, let’s say of 500 visitors per day, you can start applying for sponsored content. This means that a company will pay you a certain amount of money to write an article about their product or services. By this time, you should also apply to Google Adsense.
To get your blog approved for Google ads, you should have enough unique and useful content. Google pays attention to this. So write articles that solve issues about subjects people are searching on Google. By the time you apply, you should have at least 20 well-written articles.
Add these pages to a menu on your website and make it easy to access. You should also focus on the design of your blog, so buy a great theme and make it look sharp.

What blog platform should I use?
