I keep on insisting to all my friends who own a business to get on Pinterest as fast as possible, and I think I might continue to do so for a while. Sadly, Pinterest isn’t what it used to be. Back in the day, you were allowed to repin the same pin as many times as you wanted. I remember how easily I used to make a pin go viral and then let it grow for the rest of the year, making me money without the need for intervention.
These days it’s harder to make a pin go viral, and even if it does go viral, the momentum dies quickly. Personally, I think it’s because Pinterest is trying to push using ads to reach your target audience.
Don’t get me wrong, Pinterest continues to be a gold mine for free and high-quality traffic, but it used to be even better two years ago. Since we can’t dwell too much on the past though, I will talk to you today about how to get targeted traffic to your store with the help of Pinterest.
Did you know Pinterest has its own shopping tools? It’s obvious that your products should be on there because you could reach your target audience through just a few well-chosen keywords.
If you haven’t started a store yet, we have two tutorials for you for Shopify and WooCommerce below. You should also check our print on demand article HERE.
What niches work best on Pinterest
If you are selling any type of clothing then you are in big luck because a lot of people come on Pinterest for fashion inspiration. Beauty and self-care are also big on there, along with home decor and garden, lifestyle, and health. Another big niche on Pinterest is business and anything business or productivity related.
It’s important to remember though that every niche has its audience, so if your e-commerce business isn’t in one of the above, then you could still make nice money if you decide to join the platform.
How to use Pinterest for Ecommerce
The most important step of having success on Pinterest is doing keyword research. You can do that by taking your main niche and writing it to the search bar on Pinterest.
Once you get your results, pay attention to the words written under the search bar, before the pins. Those are the most searched keywords combine with your main one from the search bar.
Another trick is to write your keyword in the search bar and then wait for the suggestions without pressing search.
The third tip is to analyze the first search results. What titles and descriptions have they used? If they appear on the page at the top when you search it, it means they used the right keywords.
The following pin is a great example of how you should keywords to describe your pin. It’s no surprise this pin is at the top of the search results.
Before going further, make sure to register for a business account. You can do that by going to this page. This step is important because Pinterest offers many analytic tools that will help you understand your presence on the platform better and show you what works and what doesn’t. Make sure to also verify your website. You can do that by going to Settings and then to Claim Website.
The next step is to personalize your account and show your brand. Add your logo to the profile picture, write a decent description of your business. You should use a few keywords in the description as well. For example, if you own a pet store, say so. Depending on what products you are selling, you could mention a few of them, the ones that sell best. As you can see below, this online shop has also used the keywords “pet toys” and “dog” in their name. That is another important place where you should use a few keywords that describe your online store.
Next, you should create a few boards and fill them with pins. Don’t try to come up with unique and quirky names for your boards, stick to your keywords and add them to the name and description. Your description should have sentences, not just keywords. Think of a few sentences that could describe what the board is about and make sure to add those keywords in a natural way.
Once you have your boards, look for a few pins that fit them and add them. Make sure they have the right description and title, and that the link actually takes you to the right page. If the link is broken then Pinterest might flag your own pins and show them to lesser people.
Your next step is to go to your own store and add your own products to Pinterest. I suggest you install Pinterest’s extension to make it easier or add a plugin to your store for social media sharing. Click on the images from your products and save them to the right boards. Once the pins are saved, go to Pinterest and edit the description.
My advice is to use Canva.com to create more engaging content for Pinterest. Create an account and write “ads” in the search bar then choose a template to start editing. I created these two pins in 5 minutes by searching “pet toys” in pictures. You can also create your own template by using the elements they give you. Make sure to add your keywords to the description of the pin before uploading it to Pinterest, this is important for SEO.
